Girls Rock the House (GRTH) is a national initiative for 8th grade girls in political districts represented by women of the House of Representatives. Local GRTH groups are formed in collaboration with middle schools and other community organizations. Led by an instructor, each group will engage in a six-week, hands-on learning experience.
Participating girls will:
- Better understand the political process and role of women in politics
- Learn how to become involved in politics and their community
- Better understand how to run for office and learn about other career opportunities in politics
- Build friendships and self-esteem
- Learn how to get their voice heard on community issues
- Learn how to write a congressional bill
The six-week program culminates in a national bill-writing contest. Beginning at the group level, each girl crafts and submits a bill to a local, impartial panel. Group winners then proceed to a district competition. District winners (and their guardians) from across the country then convene in Washington, D.C. for a 2½ day program to include:
- An opening reception with women House members, funders, and community delegates
- A recognition dinner
- An opportunity to meet her respective House representative
- Participation in a community service project
- An educational tour highlighting political landmarks and history
